Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), as it is now known, was for thousands of years the only medicine available to us. But these traditional cures are now being treated with a whole new respect by the medical profession.
Presented by Professor Kathy Sykes, this series produced by the BBC in conjunction with the Open University explores just how successful a range of Alternative therapies can really be why science is starting to respond to these ancient remedies.
HERBS:
We travel to South Africa and Germany to investigate the remedial power of herbal remedies where kathy finds a group of scientists who have identified at least eight ‘super herbs’. It appears that the plants from where the herbs originate from have enormously complex chemical structure containing medicinal properties modern pharmaceuticals simply cannot produce.

I am open which leaves me not ignorant. Teach me your point of view so I can have a higher understanding of it. My point is medical doctors push drugs that our ineffective and make things worse for the patients on a HUGE scale. Why so serious and defensive? I simply pointed out same flaws in the medical system. Drugs have killed more people then drunk driving and Cigarette’s. What is your proof that these herbs don’t work? Herbs CAN have …
Herbs CAN have benefits. But, they can also be extremely poisonous, since the dosage of the chemicals they contain isn’t controlled.
The reason we have developed pharmaceuticals is because we’ve proven repeatedly that they’ve effective and we can control the dosage. Herbalists, on the other hand, continue to push their products even after they’ve been proven useless.
St. John’s wort, echinacea, hoodia, etc. – all do nothing of what they claim.

why are scientist so surprise that herbal medicine work? many meds are from plants and in countries like china, herbs = medicine. herbs are just a very raw form of medicine, it’s medicine that contains no synthetic chemicals. like conventional med, herbs can really hurt or even kill people if taken improperly, but it can also save your life if it’s prescribed by a excellent doc.
